so i have a 91 4.0 4x4 auto and currently 3.55 gears and 235/75/r15 tires and i have the availability of getting some explorer gears for free witch i hear are common in the 3.73 size so how common are the 3.73 in explorers and if in the future i want to go to a 30" inch tire do you think i will have enough gearing :icon_idea:

3.55 to 3.73 wouldn't be enough gear to make the swap worthwhile. I'd just buy some 4.10's if you are going to go through the trouble of swapping.

I've driven a 4.0 ranger with 30X9.50s with a 5 speed and 3.73s, I thought it was perfect.

I'm with Sasquatch, if you are going to bother swaping, go for the 4.10's. Mine is just a DD w/265's.

I'm not saying it wouldn't work, I just wouldn't be wasting my money for that little bit of difference in gearing.

I don't think it's really wasting money (especially since 3.73s are fairly common) to get the "correct" gearing, I think a 4.0 with 4.10s is overkill for 30s and 3.55 is a bit high.

id run 3.73s with 31s an 33s with 4.10s.. ive got both set ups an they work GREAT for me.

I have a 94 4.0 auto 3.73s and 235/75-15s.

Personally, I'm geared a little too low for highway driving, especially the flats. In town it's great though. Hahnsb2 has it right for the gearing, 30's and 3.73's would be great.

will it be the same 3.55 gears 235 tires vs. 3.73 30" tires

If that's the case, give'r!
