So I was elbow deep in my drum brakes yesterday replacing the wheel cylinders, and i decided to replace the shoes as well and all the hardware... I went to the parts store and got the shoes for my vehicle (99 4x4 XLT, 3.0L V6) and got home to install them, and they're not the right ones!

but it's weird, because they fit perfectly, and are totally the right ones, except my old shoes had a threaded stud (attached to the shoe) on the bottom, for the adjusting screw to screw onto. and these new ones don't, and neither do ANY of the other shoes i've looked up at ALL the parts stores, including ford. what the hells the deal? IU can't use the shoes without the stud, because there's nowhere for the adjusting screw to go.

anyone else have this problem?

I managed a brake shop for years and never saw a setup like that. A photo may be helpful. Maybe part of the adjuster fused to the shoe and looks like part of it.

If all else fails you can buy a new set of standard adjusters to mate with the new shoes you bought. This would also eliminate the problem the next time you do a brake job.:icon_cheers:

Yup, your adjuster is just stuck to the shoe, grab it with some pliers and wiggle that sucker off there.

thanks guys...

yea, you guys we're right.. found the right shoes, and tracked down a self adjusting screw assembly kit (took me all day, you'd be surprised, those are had to come by) and the new shoes and all hardware are on, and went ahead and replaced the drums too. the brakes are working beautifully now!

thanks so much guys
