3.0 purchase issues

My buddy is looking at buying a 2000 ranger off Craigslist, the guy says it has some engine problems: "The engine has an issue, I'm not sure what the problem is, but I was told it could be timing. It runs, but dies sometimes, almost like losing all horsepower, not electrical."

Any ideas on what this could be? If its a simple fix he might get it...

My problem with that ended up being the fuel pump relay after all the work I did. It was always too loud on the street so I never could tell prior to all the stuff I got that the fuel pump was failing to engage. A bad inertia switch also does this. When the truck runs fine when it does run, but just shuts down and refuses to start randomly, those are the two major culprits. Not much of a chance it's the timing or any 'major' problem.
