Does anyone know if the 87 2.3 use a crankshaft position sensor? My chiltons shows a picture of it but it is not on the schematic.

No, DIS started in '89... Wait a minute, you should have a 2.0 in your Ranger, and it should have a dizzy, no CPS... Didn't all Ranger 2.3 use DIS and they didn't start till '89 right?

No the 2.3 was introduced in 83. Distributor less Ignition started in 89 on the 2.3 with the addition of 2 spark plugs per cylinder.

Yeah, I know DIS started in '89, I just read something in the Tech Library and it said something about only the 2.0 until '89... It confused me...

Ok, so the crankshaft position sensor is used with the distributorless system? I am confused because I am using a 89 block in a 87 truck which uses the distributor, but I do not see where the crankshaft position sensor connects to anything on the wiring harness.

That's because you're trying to use a DIS engine with a non-DIS wiring harness... You really need the wiring harness from the '89 truck...

I switched the cylinder head to a 87 DIS, so I should not need the crankshaft position sensor should I?

So, you're saying you have an '89 DIS block, with an '87 non-DIS head? If that's the case, I would say no, you don't need it...

No its the other way around. I have a '87 DIS head with a '89 non-DIS block, however the block has the hole for a distributor. I am taking off the coil packs, so I really don't need the crackshaft sensor do I?
