i have a 01 ranger with 33x15.50 super swampers on it. and i want to do some things to get more power out of it. where should i start?

Have you fixed the gearing?

+1 Either put the stock tires on it, or change the gearing........

i just regeared. im still breaking in the gears. but, its given me a substantial boost. i can merge into traffic with confidence and burn the tires in D with no problem now (this was purely accidental).

Gearing, under drive pulleys and a chip. Under Dog makes some great under drive pulleys that give you a noticeable power increase. The chip will not only change your engine performance, but it's also kinda like a shift kit if you have an auto.

Put in a stick shift.

Cat-back exhaust.

exhaust and intake systems are a monumental waste of money if your looking for anything other than noise.

what gears did you choose? with 33's i would have likely gone with 4.88's at least.

as stated, an underdrive pulley and tuner are your next best bets. after that you can obtain a set of 1.7:1 5.0 roller rockers to increase effective valve lift.

a 5 speed swap was suggested...and its a good idea if you arent set on keeping the automatic. it will give you more power to the ground, better economy, and more reliability over the automatic.

other than those things, there isnt much that can be done to the 3.0 that is cost effective.

it has the 4.10 gears in it now and my gas mileage is terrible with 4.56 or 4.88 i cant even imagin..it gets about 10-13 city now what would it get after 4.56 gears?

your mileage would probably go up with 4.88 or better gearing. the 3.0 is a revver and the higher gearing would keep it in the revs better, where its more efficient.

dont bother going from 4.10s to 4.56's....skip and go for the 4.88's or even 5.13's.

Is this a 5 speed or auto?

With 5.13s and 37s im getting 15-17mpg in town and will cruise in 5th gear at 85mph on the highway. Gears help a ton, and like Wicked said the 3l likes to rev. Id go with 4.88s, you will have good power and get bette mpg.

^ and his truck is about as heavy and aerodynamic as a brick shithouse :D
