new to the world of subs

so I am new to the world of car stereos and I really want a sub but dont know much about them. I want a 10" or a 12" to put behind the drivers seat in my supercab but I still want space so one person can sit back there, my budget is $200 for everything will that get me something decent or do i need more money.
 
that depends on what you all ready have,you can fit a 15 in there and still have one seat to use. a few questions are how much bass do you want and what kind, more punchy or more rumbling bass, do you have a factory HU or an aftermarket one. can you get a system for $200 yes, but i wouldnt ask you to spend your money on it. it would be low quality but you will have a system.
 
i know for the cost it wouldn't be anything to powerful i just want a system with more bass. I have a stock head unit from a limited explorer and I want to keep that. because of my budget I don't have high expectations
 
not always true 4x4fun... i got two Memphis DVC 15s in a ported box with a 1000 watt Kenwood amp. I got the Memphis's for $20, the head unit for $70 and i bought the Kenwood amp with a set of Kenwood 12s for $200. But i sould the subs for $125.. So all together i got a hard hitting system for $165... Just be sure to shop around ThePretzelman. and dont make newbie mistakes like rushing into something... There are some great deals out there if u look... 4x4fun is right too by sayin to get a 15 cuz it will fit and leave room for someone to sit. And you would b very pleased with the bass. Jus b a smart shopper.
 
the cost for wiring and a decent amp puts him close to the 200 budget. headunit with amp outputs are usually around 100 bucks for a good one and for 1000w rms amps are going to be more than 200$
 
i am by no means an expert

but what if he just started in steps?


just buy the amp for now, hook it up to his speakers, but wait until he allocates some more money to buy the sub

that way, he can spend more on the amp, so that it will benefit him in the long run
 
Doesnt matter how much money i have I always start in steps. I usually buy the amp first and go from there. My first system took a few months to plan out and save up cash.

how much of that was new and what was used. you should never buy used stuff.

U aint gona find a set of new memphis subs for 20 bux. not even from a crackhead.. lol... i know what u mean as far as never buyin used stuff.. i aint no newbie to the car audio world. jus cuz somethings used dont always mean it aint any good tho. with a $200 budget and tryin to find all new things is goin to be impossible if he wants a half decent system. Of course theres always the option of goin to walmart and buy some cheap a** system their:icon_rofl: Now he might be able to save a few bux by not getting a head unit and getting an RCA converter. thatd save him half the cost. def not long term. just long enough for him to save more money for a HU. even by doin that tho itd be cuttin it close. it wouldnt be anything to draw a crowd. :icon_thumby:
 
Yea i agree with not buying used audio equipment, that shit could be hot (as in stolen), or it could royally fail on u, and then ur out the money that u paid for the used stuff. Take for example my buddy jake, his old system was a used JVC headunit, a used Sony XPLOD amp ( i think it was like 1000 watts or sumthin.) and then he got a used Kenwwod sub (12 inch) in an old ported box. He paid a grand total of 140 bucks for all of it. Him and i wired it up in his garage, and as soon as he turned it up, the sub blew, and the amp went in2 protect. The headunit, still works, but he doesn't use it anymore.
 
I've learned thats its worth saving up and spending a little bit more money to get something descent. Cause you'll usually end up spending more later on a better system anyways. I never seem to stop upgrading my system, its like a bad addiction! lol Just take your time and look around and you can usually find a good deal sooner or later.
 
Valid points. And i completely understand. The thing is, i bought my things from a good friend of mine. I NEVER buy ANYTHING from someone w/o making sure the sub or amp or stereo work and it handles what it should. Thats why no one should ever jus rush into a system w/o checking it first. Dont get me wrong. Ive had brand new equipment b4. And i aint saying that u should never buy new things. And i aint saying that used is better. Im just saying that with whatever your going to buy, do ur research.
 
might find memphis subs for $20 but not kickers

Just make sure whatever you do get a 10".
