Hey, I pulled my buddies 1959 F100 to the muffle shop on a triaxle with my '68 VW bus. I also towed a '73 Thunderbird on it. Some engineers on Pendleton made the hitch for my bus for me and the trailer we rented from MWR. The van had surprising abilites--it's first gear is like a tractor--no hill presented a problem for us--and I could even use second sometimes. We didn't go over 25 with the trailer loaded and we couldn't go over 40 with the trailer empty. But the suspension on the van was up to it and even the brakes were good enough at the speeds we went. Your minivan is perfectly suited to tow that.

Could be worse I saw a guy tow an 80's Monty Carlo on a 18ft car trailer with an 80s Dodge Caravan...... thats stupid.

I'm back & need to tow the Ranger a couple hundred miles!!!!! (I looked thru the towing threads, but wanted to make sure it's gonna get towed correctly with a bumper hitch)

The '36 Ranger is complete('cept for the interior)

Refresh my memory.....(I don't want the hassle of a trailer, even though it's the best way to tow the Ranger)

I'll be using an A-frame tow bar the connects to the bumper/frame on the Ranger & will be pulling it with a biiiiiiiig SUV....

I know I need to disconnect the ranger A/T driveshaft at the pinion shaft & tie it up good for the trip.....

I have a custom non-locking steering column connected to the OEM Ranger P/S box...

Is there anything I need to do concerning the Ranger steering to keep the truck in control on the trip? For example: hitting a bad bump in the road while towing the Ranger & causing the steering to get whiplash making the Ranger swerve etc.?

Or, will it behave itself over bumps, turning corners etc.????

I figure I better ask some stupi(E)d questions now, than be sorry later.....LOL

just put the trans in neutral, it will be fine, no need to tie up the driveshaft.

and as long as the truck is straight, it will pull in the direction you pull it.

it wont go haywire, theres nowhere for it to go. its attached to your (suv) lol

:icon_surprised: :icon_surprised: :stop: that is a big , big no-no , on all ford vehicles i know of , when flat towing you have to remove the driveshaft , the pump in the A/T will not run while being towed in neutral , and you will cause lots and lots of damage to the transmission as there will be no fluid movement.

and to answer your question DG , i once saw a tow truck driver hook a bungee cord from the steering wheel , down to the seat frame , and back to the other side of the wheel , kind acted like a shock absorber , the wheel would turn a little , the the bungee cord would return it back to center

If you haven't already done this...

Leave the wheel loose. I tried to restrict the wheel movement when flat towing before and it didn't work out very well, when making turns it would try to just drag the front end of the towed vehicle around. Unlocking the wheel usually works just fine as long as the alignment is not really bad.

I'm back.....the last time I towed a vehicle---it had manual steering...the power steering on the Ranger oughta keep it tracking behind the ess u vee...

V.A. meds....you gotta love em (keep an eye on me just in case though)

Now...where'd I pi....put that new tow bar?

My 2006 Ford Freestar 4.2l w/3.55 ratio minvan with tow package, out pulls my 2002 Ranger Edge 3.0l w/ 3.73s and tow package both in actual towing and by Ford specs as well. The vans is rated for an 8300# gross combined weight, and it breaks down to 5800 gvw and 3500 trailer. The van wears the towing pants in my house.........:shok:

i towed a 93 thunderbird on a tow dolly with my 3.0 94 ranger no problem got up to speeds of 65 on the interstate lol was a little nerving but had no issues have even pulled doubles lol not fun when each trailer is as long as the truck its made me very proud:headbang:
