Oil smells like gas

just realized its been 8 months(only 2700 miles though) but i think its time for a change. the light hasn't come on yet though

You should change the oil. Since it's been 8 months and only 2700 miles, I'm assuming you do a lot of short trips. This explains the fuel smell. When you first start the truck, the computer makes it run rich until the engine warms up, a lot like a choke on a carb'ed vehicle. Some of that excess fuel ends up in the oil, diluting it. This is one of the reasons short trip driving is a lot harder on an engine than long, extended trips. With the amount of driving you do, I would just change the oil every 6 months regardless of mileage.

And I don't know what light you're referring to. Rangers don't have a "change oil" light.

also when you kill your trk the residual pressure in the fuel system bleeds down, some bleeds thru your injectors into the cylinders, also diluting your oil. it may not be 3k miles yet but 3 mos max on your oil changes for this reason and condensation in the block running into the oil further diluting it.

yes i do have a check oil light 94 3.0 (this is before they switched the dash). its between the check engine and check battery.

but thanks for the other help ill deff start changing oil more frequently ( it got away from me this time.)

That light means your oil is low, not needing to be changed.

+1. That's not the "change oil" light, it's the "change engine" light. By the time that light turns on, there's a good chance your engine is already toast.

Yea, the 08/09's are starting to have the change oil soon reminders,

No it's the oil level light, not the pressure. It usually turns on at 1.5 quarts low. I ran my 2.9 to the low oil light constanly, and added then, lazy man's dipstick :thefinger:

Has the MPG changed? Oil smelling like gas is a classic sign of leaking fuel injectors.

its exactly 1 qt low on my 93 3.0. when my engine burned a qt every 1000miles it would kick on when i forgot to check that day or parked on a hill when it was almost that low. a full quart gets it all the way up the stick.

Haha, that thing must have left some gnarly oil puddles...
