I wanted to post this info here so that it would be easier for someone to find it in the future.


I used an ECHO spring. It worked perfectly on my Dana 35. Others have used the same spring with the same success.

The ECHO spring part # is 69621655730.

Any lawn shop that carries ECHO will be able to get this for you. You can click the link below to find your nearest Echo dealer.

The cost from an ECHO dealer is about $5 + tax.

It is hard to get over the splines of the axle shaft, but once you do it works great. The boot will fit over the spring. Get yourself 2 hose clamps to hold the boot on once you put it back as you will destroy the factory retainers getting the boot off.

thanks, you posted that just in time cause me and my little bro are doing his D35 this week and i told him we need to do this mod. im going to head next door to the hardware store (who is an echo dealer) and get one ordered!
 
Echo is a power tools brand. Mostly lawn tools like lawn mowers, chainsaws, weedwackers, leaf blowers etc.

Yep, I did this about 2 months ago, and it's been great so far. I called a small engine repair shop which also was an Echo dealer and they had it in stock for about $3.15 I think. The spring was a little difficult to get over the splines of the shaft to begin with, but It can be done.
 
Another source for a spring is OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware... I think this may be a California-only chain though, not sure). They have a whole endcap on the hardware aisle stocked with various springs.

The spring was a Century Spring # C-812 or C-810 (for some odd reason I can't seem to pull it up on Century's website :icon_confused: )

It was 1.25" I.D., about 2.5" long, with a rate around 20-30 PPI. Like the Echo spring, it took a bit of wrestling to get it over the axle splines, but once over, it fits well inside the boot.
 
Where's the shaft collar to hold it in place on the driver side of the shaft, or did you weld it to the shaft on that side?

Or it's just not showing in the pictures?

I used the same spring, it was a bitch to get over the splines for sure. :annoyed:

I also used this spring. I think its the best one to use for this modification/article as Echo power equipment is sold nationwide as opposed to the hardware store chain that junkie mentioned. It is also readily available to be purchased as a single unit unlike the springs from century if ordered online.

I put a bead around my shaft, but the hose clamp would hold it in place like Junkie said.
