i have a 88 2.9 and i was just wondering if you needs the cat on the exhaust? My muffler fell of and its completely shot can i just run a pipe in place of the cat?
 
well i feel that cats r pointless but thats just me. so with that out of the way, i have a 95 2.3 5sp and my cat was toast and my muffler had a hole in it. i first cut the muffler off. replaced it with a glass pack. then i got annoyed with the leaky cat and fumes. so i then replaced it with a piece of piping. i left it like that till about a month ago and then installed a 3aracing muffler so thats what i did. so yes u can eliminate the cat. we dont need it for inspections and as long as u dont mind a ratty sounding 2.3 u b good
 
just so you know even though you don't have inspection's it is still ILLEGAL to remove your cat
 
removing the cat converter is illegal in any state, in any area, no matter what your local emissions laws are and regardless of if you have to pass e-testing or not. on top of that, it HAS been known to cause drivability problems in certain vehicles (this seems to be almost a vehicle-to-vehicle basis).

replacement cat converters can be had for $80...just replace it if its bad.
 
tampering with a cat or any emission equipment is a federal offence, something like 5 years in jail and a 5000$ fine if caught. its there for a reason :icon_thumby:
 
wow #1 i said we have inspections in new york duh. learn how to read. ive been pulled over by many nyspd and they c my glasss pack and my other muffler and they dont ask questions. and yes depending on what pos u own it can possibly cause drivibility questions. ok federal offense and u said 50tho well find a cop thats gonna wanna have that paper work to do. on top of that dont drive like an asshole and u wont have ne problems, am i right or am i wrong.
 
my bad $5000 sry. ive argued this bfor and i will again, i put my pink slip on the line to say that since ive removed that restricting hunk of metal i have more high end power and mine runs a hell of alot better. o and just to piss the rest of u off i removed the second o2 sensor to.
 
A. you never said anything about having inspections OR new york. perhaps YOU should learn to read.

B. wether you get in trouble or not is beside the point. its against the law.

C. i dont care what your "butt dyno" tells you. no properly functioning cat converter is costing any modern engine fuel economy or power.
 
as for mpg well i havent noticed ne real dropping of it. the only thing that i will tell u is to check ur plugs in like 3000 to make sure u r not fouling ne out.
 
Motors will switch from rich to lean to supply the cats with the fuel and oxygen needed for a cat to work. When you remove the cats, it will still switch from rich to lean to feed a cat that is no longer there (this is built into the computer program). This will dump unburned fuel down your exhaust and the smell will be noticable for vehicles driving behind you. The fuel useage to supply the cats will still be there even when the cats are removed.
 
they have alcohol leagl and kills every day so ur point bout being ill legal is.... this country and government make laws to make money so. and bout that ins thing read my first on this i did say it but im not gonna argue with every one bout stupid crap. love2hunt1993 do what u feel u should do its youre truck i was just tryn to help man. ne time u mention going catless u will run into these law abidding guys.
 
yes good popint dernst u will have unburnt fuel and some odor. my 95 did it for like 3 months and its not spuin nasty odors ne more. the computer will adjust its self. if u drive like an idiot wit ur foot on the floor u will smell fuel and u will watch youre gas guage drop
 
fuel injected vehicles do not switch from rich to lean for any reasons involving the cat converter. this is just how narrow band O2 sensors work.

the government makes laws for many reasons. in the case of emissions devices, its to help prevent mostly illiterate and ignorant people who have no idea how a vehicle works, much less the effect of said vehicles operation, from increasing the tonnage of air pollutants dumped into our breathing air everyday. am i a greeny weeny? i dont think so. but if i can help reduce the amount of air pollution i create without going out of my way (read: giving up power or fuel economy) then i will.

you can do as you please. but before you go suggesting that other people illegalize their vehicles and needlessly increase the amount of pollution they create like you have, you should at least have a basic concept of cause and effect (its obvious from your posts that you dont).
 
well in youre case we should just say no cars and o yea just think bout all the semis on the road that are up to code and they cause more pollution in a matter of prolly 1 week than i do in a matter of of 6 months. thats a guestimation so dont qoute me. u ever own a car in the 60s - 70s those cars created just as much smog as i do.
