Just got a 2000 ranger 4x4. Do the keys have chips in them? I only have 1 key.

If you have a little red "theft" light on your dash when the truck is off, yes.

six banger, yes. four cylinder, no. The red LED is a sure sign you do have

The red LED isn't always a sure sign. My cousins dodge has a little red theft light, because it has an anti theft alarm. The key however has no chip.

A way to tell is to look at your key on the metal near the plastic base of the key, on one side it should have either a bubble, imperfection, symbol, or numbers on the surface. It will be very small, about a quarter inch wide and tall, maybe less.

But, on the Ranger it will say "theft".

If your key looks like this one, then it does NOT have a chip:

Go have a spare key cut and try it- betcha it won't operate the starter...

It most likely has a chip and since you only have 1 key be prepared to drop some cash on a duplicate (I had the same issue).

My uncle used to have a 2000 Ranger and his key looked like the first one I pictured above, so it did not have a chip in it.

Ok, Jason, you said the same thing that I did.

Another thing, you can go cut a key and have a spare for just your doors, but you shouldn't use it in the ignition, you can go to the dealer to get a chipped key.

Exbass, I have seen chipless keys like the one you pictured. The only thing about yours is it's "uncut."

i really hate that feature, it should be optional or be able to be turned off, theres way too much crap like this these days that isnt nessesary and only makes for problems. theres got to be some way to bypass it. for now my junk is old enough to not be affected. there starting to force us into automatic transmisions in full size trucks now, whats next?
