I am going to build a new puter. I was wondering if i can use my older version of XP pro, or should i get a new 64 bit version.

Is there a benifit to the newer version?

You can use the XP 32 bit operating system if you have the disc.

I wouldn't recommend a 64 bit operating system unless you are using the system as a server chassis. There are a lot of programs that are not compatible with 64 bit operating systems.

I have tried 64 bit operating system on my setup and the games I play didn't like it. They crashed multiple times because there was an interface problem.

Do you have the operating system disc?
 
Agreed with MJones, the 64-bit is worthless to you unless your using programs specifically made for it. The 32-bit XP Pro operating system is more widespread, and therefore more heavily supported via third-party programs, etc.
 
OS cheap

check this place for cheap OS system disks. I got 4 XP64 for $56 each. Works great and are legal (student) with activation key. If you have an OEM version of XP, you may have a problem reactivating.

There is another thread on memory that you may be interested in...XP does not recognize more than 3GB of RAM...a solution offered by someone to upgrade to 64 bit XP would solve the problem...but if it's a trial version (educational) then that may not even be an option for you...I've got trial versions of XP and 2K3 Server...but I wouldn't install either one if I can't get an extended license on them...
 
I am thinking about installing XP64 on my new setup.
 
After looking at the website rip1 posted earlier, i probably will also.
 
I'd make a dual boot system with Win XP 32-bit and 64-bit. Win XP x64 has trouble running some older apps, and drivers are a pain to find. I had an older radeon x800 vid card and the drivers in x64 gave me like 20 less fps than the drivers available for the 32-bit version. There weren't very many third party drivers either... everyone is moving towards Vista.
 
There's really no need for XP64. the only benefit it gives over xp32 is the extra ram and unless your running apps that eat up memory you'll no benefit only problems with drivers. Vista on the other hand will use the extra ram available in 64 bit for stuff like superfetch.

I noticed a big inmprovement in speed on mine. I have both 32bit XP Home and 64bit XP pro on the same system (each OS on its own partition).

Most of the games I have tried on the 64 bit system have worked fine thus far, but any older game I have I did not attempt yet (assuming the older ones will not like it.)
