my 86 ranger has a 2.9, when the spout is unplugged it idles and runs smooth almost perfect, lacks a lil power due to no ignition advance, if i plug the spout back in , it either dies or starts to run way too rich, misfires basically runs like crap undrivable, it has a new ECM,new EEC,new ignition pickup , new ignition coil, new plugs, cap, wires, Whats my problem?? Anyone know?? Other than it being a FORD LOL :-)

with the spout disconnected...it take the advancement out...it locks the ECM into a constant state. driveable but not as nice.

Have you gotten the codes??

check for vacuum leaks and that the grounds are good.

i have the exact same problem. at this moment my truck is on the side of the road and i'm still troubleshooting on how to fix it. i was thinking maybe a ground was out on that spout connector (on account of i run my ranger with it unplugged) and maybe it is linked to why my truck failed while driving down the road the other night. have you found out anything on yours?

my 87 ranger 4x4, stx, 2.9 also seems to run a lot better when my spout connector is unplugged, for some unknown reason, and basically runs the way you are describing your engine is, too, when your engine's spout is plugged in..

Are you guys sure the BASE timing is set correctly? The base timing needs to be set with the spout unplugged then rotate the dizzy.

Had the same problem with my girlfriend 86. Pull the spout and it would run like great. plug it in and it would start bucking and die. Spent a week diagnosing it including putting in a new computer. Turned out the TFI module on the back of the distributor was shot. Put a new one on and she ran like a top....till the fuel line blew apart (ford recall that was never performed) and burned her to the ground.
