My 97 2.3l Ranger is throwing code 1443.
It says purge control valve.
Is this the first part after the charcoal canister?
Also the hose going to it seems cracked.
This seems like a specific hose with two size openings?
Can I use fuel hose and a hose clamp? Or do I need to go to Ford?
Great to have the site back!
Thanks Dan

I believe it's P1443, and yes it's the purge valve sensor or those cracked hoses going into or from it.
I would first try replacing all those damaged hoses and resetting the CEL and see if the light comes back on. If it does then you've fixed the problem, if not then I would recommend replacing the purge valve.
This same code appeared on my 95 Ranger a few years ago and ever since I replaced my purge valve I've had no problems with it.

You correct. That should be P1443.
Now as to my second question. Do I need a special hose from Ford?

If it's just a vacuum/fuel vapor hose, then no, any good quality vacuum hose, that fits correctly will work fine.

I ended up buying the whole assembly from Ford.
It included all the hoses, purge valve and solenoid going from the canister
to the intake manifold.
The bill was $129.
Hope this fixes the problem.

Daaaaaaayum! I thought you had this fixed a while ago buddy. Sorry to hear about that.
But yes, that should take care of the code. Make sure to reset the computer and let us know if the CEL stays off. Later.

This fixed it.
Passed emissions with flying colors.
A real easy assembly. Bit spendy though.

Glad to hear you got it fixed. Yeah, you're right about being pricey. I forked over like $80.00 or something like that if I remember right just for the stupid purge valve.....ouch!

Yep, little spendy...but when you drive a ferrari of trucks..you have to expect that....har,har...
I changed the very same assembly about a year and a half ago.
Side note: made a 1200 mile trip to Tx and back and averaged ~25 mpg over the 1200 miles, I was pretty impressed.

i had the same code and replaced the solenoid and the valve which fixed the problem and kept the CEL off.. in retrospect i would have done the valve first before the solenoid (cheaper of the 2).
replaced the vac line with standard line.

Actually, I was reading in another forum that one should try spraying
the purge valve and solenoid with carburetor cleaner and compressed air before
replacing them.
When I tired this, it seemed like the purge valve and the solenoid was connected by a hard hose that would not come apart.
I ended breaking the solenoid trying to get it apart. Hence the complete
replacement.
Did I do something wrong?

hmmm... that isn't like how mine was set up. there was a hose in between the purge valve and the solenoid but it was a rubber line.
i could see busting off the plastic nipple the line goes onto.. but in that case it would ruin the part anyhow. i have read some folks have been able to get the valve working again by spraying carb cleaner through it. i think the solenoid either works or it doesn't...

I think some sensors are actually parts that are disguised as mechanisms that can go off so you have to go to the stealership to fix....hahahah.

Hey guys, I'm a noob here. I have the same po1443 code that comes back repeatedly on my '95 5 speed, and the code scanner just says "Emmisions related" but no specific info. Now I have the info and a possible cheap cure! Thanks, Rick:icon_cheers:

Mine was a rubber hose too, but as much as I tugged on it it wouldn't come
apart. Perhaps I should have tried cutting it off. I ended up breaking the
spendiest part!

isn't that always the case? bust a $70 part to replace $2 worth of vac. line...

you might try spraying carb cleaner through the purge valve. if that doesn't work then replace the valve first it's the cheaper one. if it still doesn't keep the code away then you need a new solenoid. oh and in this case it's much better to go to the stealer for the parts....

My hoses don't look brand new but they look good enough. Am I an unexperieced fool? I did replace 2 hoses. Replaced sensor and purge valve. The canister looks okay, but I didn't take it off and inspect it as throughly as possible. Nevertheless code still shows. Autozone guy says he couldn'gt clear code. This is a first. Someone give me a game plan. Thank you. 97' Ford Ranger 2.3 liter

YOU should be able to clear the code by disconnecting the battery for 5 min. Granted, it may come back if problem is still there but it should clear initially. May take it to someone else to pull codes/clear codes on it.
The hoses that 'look good' could still present a problem as well. Could have electrical issue with connector/wiring on the sensor also.

couldn't or wouldn't? sometimes autozone guys if they play by the book won't turn off a CEL if it is an emissions related code.
as per above reply, did you disconnect a battery cable? that should turn off the CEL.

Here's a game plan:
The hoses are cheap, and since you've already replaced 2 hoses and the valve and sensor I would replace them all with new ones. Then I would blow compressed air through the canister and disconnect the battery (neg. cable) for about 30 seconds to clear that CEL.

Consider getting your own code reader.
They can be had for under $50
This could be better than running back and forth to Autozone.

I went to the dealer to get the rubber hose for the valve, over a $100. and you cannot but just the hose.

that;s a ripoff...
the line i got was rubber 1/4" o.d. it cost only a few $.. i replaced the length from the canister to the solenoid. it was fairly tough to get the end on the canister as it is larger than to the connection at the solenoid. i just sprayed some wd-40 on it and it went easier. then i replaced the very short piece between the solenoid and the purge valve. then the remaining piece down to a hard line that leads i guess back to the fuel tank...
that part went on easy.
i did this whole thing to get rid of the CEL and be able to pass inspection.
it didn't change the performance of the engine one iota.

hi, my truck was running rough 1997 ranger 2.3 5 speed, no power, running rich with the cel on.i had this same code, i replaced the purge valve and reset the cel and it ran great for a couple of days and then cel back on and running rough again?? any ideas?? thanks , joe

When I went to the dealer they told me I cannot get that part anymore.
So I made one out of a 3/8" to 1/4" vacuum line adapter I got from the local parts store in the help section. I replaced all the hoses like you did too.
I still get the 1443 code, but I think it is because I may have a pinched hose above the fuel tank. I need to lift up the bed to do that. Or it could be one of those electrical devices by the evap canister is bad???

Great way to revive an old thread buddy!
Since your purge valve is new I would suggest that you check voltage to the sensor and also ALL the vaccum lines going to and from the valve. Take a good look at your canister as well for cracks and what not. Take care.
