Post some pics of your front and or rear bumpers, winch mounts, tow points to give others ideas.

The front grill was cut so that the winch could be set back as far as possible to maximize approach angle.

The rear cross member was cut out and a few inches of frame where cut off. The shackle rivets where removed and the holes where incorporated onto the bumper mount. The bumper acts as the rear cross member now. Also two clevis mounts.

My new rear bumper is in the works. I am making one that I can mount a winch on. I will post some pictures when I get it done.

I made this thing for some tow points on the front and to move the stock bumper up to match my body lift.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/3/web/291000-291999/291515_17_full.jpg

It mounts by the 2 holes on each side bolt it onto the frame via two existing holes, pretty mild but the topic comes up alot since relocation brackets are not available for gen1 trucks.

Boomer, that is the sweetest front bumper and skid plate ever. How much did that thing cost you?

Boomer
08-10-2007, 08:14 PM
Thanks...650 total. The d-ring you see in the front is a class 3 hitch welded to the frame behind the skid plate. I just put a warn xd9000i on it. I can't go to any 4x4 meets with out someone asking about the bumper. I would gladly spend that again if I got another truck, I like it that much.

tbcmarine

$650 is not bad at all. If you get the Warn grill guard with winch mount and the brush guard extras and stuff, it is almost that much. And no grind plate. I wish there was a place around here that would take a project like that on. All I want is a skid plate for the font to cover the radiator and stuff.

Front is made from 2x2" and 2x4" steel tube. Winch plate is from a Warn Trans4mer kit.

Rear bumper is made from 2x5" tube, the tire carrier from various pieces of 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2", and has a place for a Hi-Lift jack.
The holes cut for the backup lights are framed in with pieces of 2" x 1/8" strip.
Mud flaps mount to the bumper (and are removable).

Both bumpers are all 1/8" wall tube to save weight (plus, the truck's frame is hardly thicker than that anyway). Gussets are used in key areas around the mounting points to retain it's rigidity.
Still have to put on the shackle mounts (made from 2"x 3/4" strip, and will go all the way through the bumper (outside of the lights) to tie into the frame mounts).

whitetrash96 , I love what you have on the front there, very nice work.
4x4junkie , I also really like yours.

Here is mine, I am putting 2"x2"x1/4" tubing behind the tinfoil outer sections of the front bumper. And when I get a chance I'm going to move the rear hitch receiver over top of the tow bar instead of under.

Just so you know its not a good idea to put the tow hooks on your bumper like that. I think sooner then later its gonna end up pulling your bumper off.

metalmacguyver
12-07-2007, 01:13 AM
what did you do to beef up that rear bumper for tow point duty?

Dishtowel
12-07-2007, 10:24 AM
what did you do to beef up that rear bumper for tow point duty?

Honestly, nothing. I positioned my D-links *just* inside of each frame rail for optimum load transferal to the frame, anytime I pull from them 99% of the load goes straight to one frame rail, the rest has to transfer sideways through the bumper to the other frame rail, I feel this is defiantly better than if I had put them outside the frame rails, and a tiny bit better than if I had put them in-line with the frame rails. This way the other frame rail at least knows that there is a load, I have seen a truck where they were pulling on 1 frame rail and they ended up sliding it forward. If you were to look at that frame from above or below it is now a parallelogram instead of a rectangle. I'm relying on the bumper to act as a cross member as well, a job which I think it is up to. Other than that I made sure the bolts were in good condition and made sure my welds had good penetration.

I think sooner then later its gonna end up pulling your bumper off.

Thank you for your concern, but I don't think I will pull my rear bumper off, if I'm stuck bad enough that I feel there is a danger of pulling it off I will tie into the frame for that pull. I know I will never pull the front bumper off. If someone wants to suggest that I am in danger of shearing six 1/2" grade 8 bolts with a 4400 lbs truck then.... IDK, but I sincerely doubt that will happen.

*IF* anything ever comes apart on the rear bumper I have chosen my weakest link to be the bumper-to-frame union, which there is 2 of. This is so when I reach the point of something failing the first thing that will happen is one side of the bumper will come off the truck. My experience has been that things like this will bend and not all four bolts will fail at the same instant. There will at least be a moment of warning (and a noise?) before the whole pulling assembly (winch?towrope?) comes undone. This gives you a second to either let off with your pulling device, and/OR duck and cover, hehe.
For the rear bumper to come undone two 1/2" bolts have to shear. I know that metal strengths come into play here but to have a quick look at it...
Two 1/2" bolts have a shear area of 0.1963 sqr inches, (remember there is two perside, =4)
ONE 5/16" winch cable has a tensile area of 0.0767 sqr inches.
So two bolts have more than double the area of metal that has to fail compared to the cable that I do 90% of my recovery work with.

So even if the frame-to-bumper bolts don't prove to be the failing part, I think the bumper itself is next in line. Again, it has been my experience that things like this yield before they completely fail, giving the people (that pay attention anyways) some warning. There is the heavy drawbar section (1/4" plate?) that mounts to the frame rails. If this is the part that fails it will bend before it comes apart, thus letting me know. I sized the D-links bigger than the frame-to-bumper bolts because I don't want to have D-link's or clevis's (or parts of either) becoming bullets when winching.

*IF* I manage to mangle/ruin this bumper, I will be forced to build something on-par with my front bumper, then there will be no more trouble.

Front started out as just a push bar, I welded C channel and D-rings to it and removed the stock bumper. Rear I bought off of Broncman on B2.org.

Hi Folks,

I am having an existing winch bumper for a Jeep ZJ adapted to my Ranger. This will be a prototype and the creator, Mike, of Custom 4X4 Fabrication (www.custom4X4fabrication.com) in Oklahoma City, hopes to market it for us in the RBV community. Stand by for more... here's the basic Jeep configuration before fitting it to my Ranger.

All the final measurements have been checked and verified - I ordered it on Friday. Unfortunately, Mike told me he couldn't start it for around 3 weeks... he is swamped with Jeep orders right now. I'll update when I have a better handle on when it will arrive.

Well, I returned home from Toronto Friday morning at 1:30 AM! I slept in and then went in to work after lunch to find a large box sitting in the receiving area from Custom 4X4 Fabrication. I know, I know... everyone wants pictures.
http://www.justtruckin.net/images/Bumper/WinchBmpr17.jpg
I am too busy at work to trial fit the bumper yet but thought everyone would still like to hear my preliminary impressions. Awesome was my first impression - rugged, well built, superb welding, nicely finished edges. This thing is going to be awesome! My next thought was "Why the hell does ARB charge so much?" I'm going to have to leave it at that until I have some more time. Hopefully, next Saturday, I can shoot down to the shop and trial fit it and get some pictures. Patience is a virtue... so they say!

Sorry for the delay folks - I test fitted it today and cut the brush guard to fit on top of it! All I have left is some welding to actually mount the brush guard, sandblast, paint and install. Hopefully will be done and on by mid-April!

Also, in place, it will clear the factory front crossmember (that I removed on mine) - you just have to come up with mounting brackets that will work with the factory mounts. Should not be a problem - I am talking with Mike (Custom 4X4 Fabrication) about it now. More info to follow!

The winch box itself is 1/4" and the rest of the bumper is 3/16" - she weighs 115 lbs so with the winch it'll be around 200! I'll need an M90 Eaton just to push the bumper around :-) (Hey, it was worth a try)

I took 54 pictures - I'll dig through and PM you a few more when I get some time! Lookin' forward to Albany already!

You mentioned it's originally a ZJ bumper ... do you know the extent of the modifications to get it to fit on the Ranger?

$375 plus shipping for the modified ZJ bumper. Mike at Custom 4X4 Fabrication modified the bumper to Ranger specs - narrowed the winch box to fit out frame rails and brought his mounting plates in closer for the same reason. I made my own mounting brackets and I had already cut out my front crossmember. Mike is trying to find a local Ranger owner in Oklahoma City to get some new mounting brackets fabricated that will utilize the stock Ford mounting style. Check with Mike:

I finished the little odds and ends today and mounted it with the winch, roller fair lead and fog lights.
I'm leaving it on for a day or two to make sure everything is O.K. I plan on pulling it off and sending it and my sliders to the sandblaster. After they're stripped and primed, a fresh coat of Dupont Imron epoxy enamel in matching Ford white! Finally getting near the end... thanks for all the ideas and support from everyone that helped.

A special thanks to Mike from Custom 4X4 Fabrication for making the Jeep bumper work on a Ranger!!!

Sweet looking bumper! Not that it needs it, and I'm probably being picky but do you think it would clean it up a lil bit to weld some small flat bar on edge on the sides to help fill in the gap under the lights, as the grill hangs lower? Please feel free to tell me to F' off if I'm outta line...lol

Thank you... I'm happy (almost)! It's just been going on for far too long - it'll be nice to get it done. As for the strips - "Camodown" over on Ranger-Forums did that to his but I think the brush guard helps mine. Also, there's a black plastic splash shield in there that I'm going to paint white to see if that helps. As someone else mentioned about Camo's - if you stick a strip on there, it may look like an afterthought! We'll see...

Hey jimmyd your right up in mass? where abouts? do you do much wheeling?im in Rhode island and there are absolutely no trails to ride, and you wouldnt belive how annoying it is, not even the occasional cruise, if they catch us on a power line theyre writing tickets out. not to jack the thread or anything but i didnt realize there were many southern new england guys here, And the the truck looks absolutely awsome. im not a fan of caps on trucks, but with the lift and bumper, it looks perfect

Strip, sandblast, prime and powdercoat bumper, brush guard and 2 rock slider/steps = $475! I got 3 prices to just sandblast everything so I could paint it all and they ranged from $200 - $275, so I think I did O.K.!

Just saw this, sorry for the late reply....guessing on material costs as I had the material already, I'd say $200 tops? Don't worry about using 'my' design, as I used several others influence in building it....

Thanks. I'll build one for the cost of materials and $15/hour labor, here's a couple other bumpers I've helped build for friends, not RBVs but maybe it can still give you guys ideas.

Bottom tube was removed on the Heep bumper and winch plate welded in place as well as the KC lights were mounted on the top tube like mine, just don't have a pic.

In this pics you can also see on my bumper where I added steel to the side of the winch plate to the vertical supports to fill the gaps.

Meh I'm not out to make a fortune (at least while doing work on the side), but if I ever obtain the skills (I really only have basic fab skills and tools) and means necessary to open a 4x4 shop I'd surely have to charge more than that. I'm probably going to start working with the waterjet at work which would greatly speed up cutting the steel plate and brackets as well as making them accurate, cutting everything with a 4 1/2" grinder takes forever.

JD, that bumper is almost exactly how I want to biuld mine!! On mine I want the ends (go around the side of the truck) to be closer together.

What size tube did you use? I can get a really good deal on 1 3/4" and am hoping that'll be good. My cousin/ uncle/ friend are going together to buy some, and get a discount at large quantities of the tubing, but they are getting 1 3/4".

It doesnt weigh as much as I expected it to, I would say it is around 60 pounds it doesnt sag the front any and even if it did I doubt it would sag down 10 inches to where my old bumper with the 4x4 foglight valance was. lol.

To mount it I reinfoced the frame horns then bolted it on with four 1/2 inch grade 8 bolts. There are peices of 3 inch angle iron welded on the backside of the bumper that bolt to the frame. (almost like the way the stock back bumper is set up). I will get pics of the backside tomorrow if you are interested.

I paid alot less than what he normally charges, if I am not mistaken I was told he usually gets $500-$600 for them, and the best part is that its built to your truck so every one of them is a little different

Here it is.

I still need to cap the ends, and some day I will add a bar on either side of the light hoop for some strength. The ends don't stick out quite as much as it looks, but it would have been nicer to have them in more.

I made mine out of 1 1/2" 11ga tubing for a frame then covered it with 1/8" plate. There are two back up lights as well as two d rings on the rear and four lights (2 6" and 2 5") on the front along with d rings. There is also a 2" reciever front and rear that is reinforced with 3/8" plate.

How well do those 37's clear your fenders? and that back bumper is NICE! I think i'm gonna copy it haha, after i get my body lift on it, don't want a gap back there. How long did it take you?

heres a couple I did. one is an SWAT F-650 with an armored bumper I fabbed and the other is a Freightliner SWAT truck that I used a Road Armor bumper on and made uprights and a winch mount for.

They are both on special SWAT chassis that are designed for alot of weight. The F650 weighs 25,000 and the Freightliner weighs 29,000

both have 1/4" armor on the whole body and are designed for 10 plus driver and co driver.

anyway I built these bumpers as well as some on several F-550 SWAT trucks that are shaped like the stock bumper but are armor.

It mounts by the 2 holes on each side bolt it onto the frame via two existing holes, pretty mild but the topic comes up alot since relocation brackets are not available for gen1 trucks.

Your truck is friggin sweet 85. :icon_thumby:

The grill will have to be cut when I add the winch. I will add a skidplate for radiator protection and a 2" receiver under the winch plate. But otherwise its done and on the truck.
1 1/2" tube, 1/4" plate, Bud Built winch plate, painted with flat black rattle cans.

Had to make it 'legal' when I bought the truck but didn't wanna spend 100 bucks on an oem replacement so I made my own. Still need to put some driving lights on it just been too college poor and busy. My favorite part of this is the stainless tray inserts, really nice for holding your 'drink' and tools when you are chasing gremlins.

Yeah you would have to take the bumper off and drill a bigger "feed hole" in the backside, then use a rubber plug once its done. It wouldnt be too bad though.

Hey there is a hell of lot of good work here. But I just wanted to remind you all to be careful when using zip ties for your Plates. As I just lost my plate somewhere along the highway. So what I did was take two hose clamps and drill a 1/4" hole in each one. ran a bolt threw the hole place a old hose between the tube and clap and snuged the clamps down and placed nuts on the bolts. I will get pics for you later.

While I appreciate the effort and time it took to create something of your own, it looks awful. I think the truck needs a shit load of lift and maybe it will look good. Maybe.

I just realized. It's all the straight pipe that ruins it. Get some curved pieces in there.

I also appreciate the effort and time put into it, I always like fabbed stuff vs. store bought. I don't think it's too bad, though I think a smaller diameter tube would be a little better. Curves would also help.

That bender isn't too bad once you figure out little tips to use it. Pack the tube really tight with sand prior to bending, it really helps it from crushing the tubing. I still haven't figured out how to keep it from making little tiny dimples in the metal, but for the price on the bender, it's not too bad.

Keep on fabbin' man! :icon_thumby:
