I need to replace the waterpump and fan on my '95 4.0L. I think wrench sizes are 36mm and 60mm.

Seeing as this waterpump and fan has lasted 120,000 miles, I'll probably never need these wrenches again so I hate to go out and buy them new. Got a set collecting dust in the garage?

much thanks, Scott

For what it's worth, Advance Auto used to sell the tools for $10-15.

60 mm????? What in gods name is 60 mm??
Btw, use some channel locks for the fan clutch nut. The trick is, take a vice grip plier and clamp it to the pulley directly behind the nut and let it hit whatever it can as you spin the fan and it will hold enough pressure to where you can loosen the nut. No need to wast time or money getting tools you probably wont use again. Improvise. I'm sure you own vice grips and channel locks.

thanks for the suggestions but I've been at it with all manners of vice-grips, crescent wrenches, channel locks..... there's just not enough clearence between the pulley and fan/clutch for anything but a thin open spanner.

And 60mm, that's 2.36". AKA 2 3/8"

I paid 20$ for a set. I bent the set they had for a loaner..oops!!!

I used a sawzall. Mind you I was putting an e-fan on the Mazda at the time too though.

Have you checked the local auto parts stores? They do (or at least did) sell it for $15-20.

Might need two people

You need to remove the serpentine belt.
Use a strap wrench or chain wrench to hold the pulley.
If you are worried about denting the pulley, put an piece of an old serpentine belt around the pulley, or a leather belt, then the chain wrench.
.
Now use a good open end wrench to grab the fan clutch hub hex shaft.
By the way, my 1996 3.0L wrench size was NOT what everyone had posted.
So I used a 7/8 inch (28mm was proablbly the real size)
.
Be patient, use two people, it should come off OK.

Once again thanks for suggestions. I've called up 2 local parts places and they are now up to about $40. The local Ford Stealership didn't even stock them!

I figure I can use 1 or 2 13mm or 1/2" box wrenches to hold the pulley by the pulley/waterpump bolts but I still need that jumbo wrench. Guess I'll pry open my wallet.... anyone got a jumbo crow-bar?

That wrench set is on Autozone's lone a tool list. That's the route I went when I replaced my fan & clutch.

I used a very large wrench...I think it was a 1 1/4" or something..about two feet long and loosened the fan with the belt on. The wrench wasn't exact fit but it worked flawlessly. It was a PITA working around everything, but the water pump change was very easy...easiest water pump I've ever replaced since all the bolts are the same size. Good Luck!

an even easier water pump change is on a ford straight six 300, 4 bolts, compared to what like 10?

Anywho, please enlighten me as to why you need a 60 mm wrench. I'm so curious.

Lastly, being that its a left hand thread, using the water pump pulley bolts for leverage with the two wrenches as suggested will not work.

thank you, it all makes sense to me now.
I still would use channel locks and vise grips, worked for me on countless occasions.
