I was just wondering what causes an engine to lug. I know you should not run an engine at a low rpm while placing a large load on it but why does it make that sound when you do? Where does the lugging sound come from?

HI
Lugging is not realy a sound its just what we call running in a high gear at lower than normal RPM's...
some of the sound you May here tho could be Octain knock.. if your running to low of an octain fuel... and it also could be a timming issue causing ping.
good luck

Lugging is when you are running in too high a gear for the load/speed. It will hammer the main bearings. It's the only other thing that will ruin main bearings along with infrequent oil changes.

I used to have engine knock

I changed my orginal sparkplug wires and it was gone.
