HELP! 99 Ranger 2wd Throwout Bearing

I just changed my flywheel, installed a new clutch (kit), changed the pilot bearing, and I am TRYING to change the TOB. I got the old one off, but after further inspection of the packing materials with the new one, I noticed a round steel "clip". I'm assuming this is some sort of retaing clip for the TOB, but I didn't notice the placement of it when removing the old one (found it later on the groung next to the tranny). I can not figure out where this thing goes for the life of me, and my book doesn't say a single thing about it! Can anyone out there help?????????
 
your better off replaceing the whole slave cylinder assembly, there a commmon part to fail. No need to drop the tranny again for somthing like that. I just changed mine out a few weeks ago, got the slave with the TOB attached for $45.
 
That metal ring goes with the slave cyl

on mine there is this plastic thing that goes over the spring and you push the plastic down and then there is a small place to put that metal ring. It basically keeps the top part of the slave from coming off. If you look at your old one push down on it top to compress the spring and you should see that little ring.
 
I think the retainer you are talking about is on the end of the tranni input shaft. It coils it's way around the input shaft.

To remove it use a small screwdriver locate the end of the coil and then unwind it from the shaft.
