The other day i was driving my 88 ford ranger 2.9 5 speed manual trans down the road and then all of a sudden the trans made a slight clunk noise and now it doesnt have any gears, it still starts. It used to make a bit of noise down shifting from 5th to 4th , and would rattle idling in N would stop went put clutch in. What went the clutch or the tranny?

it doesnt make the noise now :) but when it was driving it it would go away if i put the clutch in

Sounds like tranny,as when you pushed clutch in,that stopped any turning inside tranny-being why you did'nt hear anything w/clutch pushed in.

dam i may not be fixing it then.

A buddy of mine sheered his input shaft and made the same type noise the only real way to find out is to pull the tranny and look for clutch damage

You can get replacement transmissions from any wrecker. This would be a good time to upgrade the Mitsu to a Mazda M5OD.

i know i could im just not sure if i really want to or if it would be worth it

yea to me, that sounds like something inside the tranny let loose. don't beat yourself up about it, you could pick up a tranny at any junk yard and swap it in and you'd be back in business relative cheap. your not the first that this has happened to and you wont be the last.

maybe ill do that considering i got laid off and i got lots of spare time

do you still have 4th gear?
