Doing intake gaskets, what else do you need? 4.0 ohv

Ok,
I will be doing the intake gaskets on my motor soon, for the ones that have done this, what else did you have to get? What else should I be getting other then intake gasket?

Is there 2 kinds of intakes ?
Should I also get throttle body gasket?

Just looking to make sure I have all items befor I start ...
Are all these gaskets have to be bought from a dealer or does local parts stores carry this ? Where did you get yours from ?

Also would my truck have a EGR valve? I can not locate it...

Okay I will chime in.

You will need the following gaskets:
Valve cover gaskets (2)
Lower Intake Manifold Gasket (1)
Upper Intake Manifold Gasket (1)
Fuel Rail Gaskets (if you choose to take the fuel rail off)
You will need a special socket to tighten the bolts that go into the fuel rail. I belive it is is a E7, it is basically a female hex socket.

Your truck does have an EGR valve. I cannot think of the exact location, but if it is not attached to the black plastic intake plenum, you really dont need to worry about it. The good news about all of those connectors, is they basically only go to one place. I would still attach blue painters tape so they stand out.

Make sure you have the right torque sequences. Also as a special reminder, the ford shop manuals as do the chiltons list the intake bolts to be torqued from the outside in. this is WRONG. Always torque inside out in a spiral pattern.

Take pictures of the vacume lines so that way you know where they go and you dont get them mixed up.

Also you will need to do an oil and coolant change afterwards so be prepared for that.

When I say intake its more then the black plastic piece I see right, its that, the fuel rail and whats under the rail correct ? thouse being alum intake..

You said valve cover gaskets, is this just cause I am that deep ?

Oh is its dealer parts only ?

You only need to change the driver side valve cover gasket, however, some might say to change both, but in my eyes, what doesn't leak, doesn't need changed. Reason the driver side needs changed is due to the fact you need to remove the cover to get to some bolts on the intake. However once again, I have removed the intake with out removing the valve cover, all you need is a quarter inch ratchet with a universal somewhere in the mix.

This was very helpful to me, particularly in deciding if I could tackle this myself...It was a piece of cake..I have been getting the lean codes and have been looking for vacuum leaks with no success and doing quite a bit of research, I feel that most people that post and swear up and down that it is the MAF or oxygen sensors or fuel pressure are in most cases on the wrong track, if your truck runs good and starts easily, yet, you get these codes particularly in cold weather, you should suspect the upper intake manifold to fuel rail gaskets. Also, I went to a Napa parts store, if you buy the Felpro MS 90733 it contains six gaskets, you will have three extra, it's about three fifty. this set is for 96-97 rangers, if your upper intake manifold is black and plastic go for it it...it will work.

http://www.rangerpowersports.com/for...el+rail+gasket If you feel you want or need to do the fuel rail to lower intake manifold here is another good link.....not all 4.0 litres have this gasket some are a thick hard gasket...personally I would do the fuel rail to upper plenum and see if it improves before pulling the fuel rail from the lower intake maniford as it takes a great deal of finesse as you have now added fuel injectors and delicate o-rings to the mix

Also I noticed you had a 99 mine was a 2000 the upper plenum o ring style gaskets were visably distorted and abused I would recommend changing just these out and seeing if things improve....that is.. if the reason you are diving into the intake manifold is that you are getting the lean codes 171 and 174
