its not to tragic, i would def make sure you clean everything really really good first, and than clean it one more time. than i would put some wd-40 on all the bolts to loosen them up a day before you start to rip into it so you don't break any mounts or anything before you start ripping that jeep a new one.

good luck. Also, if you have never done one it will probably be tough, and i'm sure people will say "if you have to ask, than you shouldn't be doing it" well, I say how else are you going to learn, and what better way on someone elses truck? good luck

we both have never done it
but he lies the mechanice work and i can work a wrench

they way i see it is im not a pro and he knows that, what better way to learn then buy ripping into a jeep, plus i think since its an older one (i forget the year) it will be more basic and not so much wires and crap

Auto or manual?

Changing a trans is not hard. Just make sure you get all the torque converter bolts to line up and torqued down tight if its an auto, also, its usually eaiser to keep the Transfer case and trans togther as a piece, i assume its 4x4.

later,
Dustin

do you mean take it out in one piece or get the same transfer case that came with the new tranny?

What kind of Jeep is it?
If it's a YJ, be really careful dropping the skid plate. The have boxxed frames and the nuts inside have arms to keep them from spinning, similar to the Ranger trans crossmember bolts. They are known to strip or bend the arm, then they just spin in the frame and never loosen.
