when i go to start my 87 ranger 2.9 it takes 7 to 10 seconds to start and i have to pump the gas and then it starts but when the choke turns off it idles up and down between 400 and 1000, any ideas why? also when i got the truck smoged it faild the evap test in the gas tank, he said that it would give me probs, but didnt say what kind of probs, could this be the reason that it is acting up

Did you check all the vacuum lines. Can also test the ignition module on the dizzy. Might try to pull some codes and see what you get. How big was the EVAP leak?

It does not have a choke, so it could be the IAC, the thing on the passanger side of the intake manifold. Pull it and clean. Also have someone cycle the key on and off and see what it does.

The IAC is mounted on the passanger side of the upper intake, about mid stream....it will have a electrial connection to it

your engine should die when you unplug it too while it's idling...

it sounds like the IAC or a fuel problem... i.e. bad injectors or too large of injectors....
