Why can you remove the air box when you put a K&N

I've noticed when someone installs an K&N air filter they usually remove the airbox/housing that covers the filter. Why is that?

plus you can't put a cold air intake on the 2.3 because the TPS on the air box.

lol. my 94 and my brothers 96 has cold air intake lol. go to autozone they have adapters for MAF and "tps" if u dont beleive me go into "lowriders" forum and i have alot of pics of my truck in there.

I don't question that it's possible, but it is absolutely moronic to remove the housing around the filter inside an engine compartment.

I didn't want to admit but I did this myself aswell when I installed my K&N and I looked under the tech library under K&N filter set-up and it also mentions to do this aswell so I don't really understand why some would say this is a retarted thing to do.
I will confess my mpg's are low and I'm looking for answers

It's not a good idea because when you eliminate the air box, and just put a filter there, your engine is now drawing in hot air from under the hood, rather than cold air from below the headlight.

if you were to remove the whole air box assembly could you pass emissions?

I don't really see how an intake (or lack there of) whould affect passing emissions....

I'm not sure if I should reattach the whole air-box thing back. Sort of makes sense that it sucks cooler air from down low in front but at the same time adds more airflow restiction which makes my conclusion that either way won't matter.
I think technically though I'm supposed to have atleast a heat shield/deflector if I keep it all open

You really don't need that much airflow. The stock box and intake tube allows for plenty, especially for your 4 cyl.

well, from what i see, the air box has a lot of wires hooked up to it so i was wondering if all those wires were left out or taken out, would it effect emissions?

I have a 96 Ranger and the only wires were for the maf senser just after the air filter but sounds like yours is different. I'm going to start a new thread on air box on or off,
