94 Ranger chugging at idle

335: EGR (PFE) Sensor out-of-range
558: EGR Vacuum Regulator circuit failure
This is from my Haynes manual. The 335 could be the DPFE on the firewall. Is it the old aluminum kind? The 558,I'm not sure.It could be the actual EGR valve or solenoid. I hope this helps a little.

i bet if you replace the DPFE the code goes away. 
but, you should test the EGR valve before replacing the sensor. if you have a vaccum pump hook it up to the valve while the engine is runnign and apply some vaccum. The idle should change immediately. if it doesn't change and try to kill the motor the valve itself is likely bad. and if you don't have a vaccum pump just use a peice of hose and suck on it.

I replaced the dpfe and it had no change. I pulled the hose from the EGR valve and the idle came up and the engine smoothed right out. With applied vacuum on the EGR valve, idle lowers and starts running bad again.

sounds like the valve is working correctly then, probably the silenoid.

Well, i think i'm ok now! I replaced the solenoid valve and the problem seems to have gone away BUT although it is no longer spitting out a " ashy " exauhst, it still smells a tad rich to me. Checked milage today and I am getting about 24MPG. that is about normal. This is a great truck1 i made it into a wooden flat bed to haul my dirt bikes. When I got it it had 205,000. One year later it now has 225,00 miles on it!
