I am new here. Where is the engine temp sensor located on a 99 4 cyl. Ranger? Are there 2 sensors? If my temp gauge does not move and sits on cold all the time...........the sending unit is where i should look yes? All the other gauges work. THank you, Paul

I am having a similar issue and my diagnosis is a thermostat that is stuck open.
After your engine is at a normal operating temp, check the upper radiator hose to see if its warm/hot (do be careful). If it is your thermostat is stuck open and constantly cycling coolant.

Cheap fix, 6-13 for a thermostat and couple bucks for gasket.

My guess...

temp sending unit

I believe my thermostat is good because I have normal warmup time and good heat with the heater. It just doesn't look like I am registering any temp at all.

The gauge sending unit is on the driver side of the block, near the firewall. A pain to get at, you might try going through the wheel well. The other unit is the engine coolant temperature sensor which is actually used by the computer.

However, the gauge is next to useless. It's good for a general reference only. When my engine is warm it sits on the white line that begins the normal range. If it gets anywhere near the N I know it's probably overheating. Between the oil pressure and temperature gauge the gauges are probably more of a hindrance because they give you a false sense of security.

If you're getting hot air out the heater, you're probably have nothing to worry about.

+1 same exact story with my truck. But if you insist on changing it, like previously mentioned, it's on the drivers side of the block not to be confused with oil pressure sending unit, which i think is above the coolant temp sender.
