I here so much bout those shafts going bad on stock and lifting rangers w/big tires, and mine was replaced before i bought it(its an 88'). I think the shaft in my buddys ranger is bad too from wat he tells me and its an 88' also.

Is there a way to make the shaft stronger or is there a stronger one that can be swapped in?

Hey try holding the shaft right off the fire wall and have you of your buddys turn the wheel from inside and see if you got any play. Also with mine a 94 i have a body lift and am now in the process of replacing the steering coupling disc. It is a rubber like peace that sits after steering shaft right off fire wall make sure to inspect that disc as well
