Does anyone know if it's possible to use the 4.0 engine with a 2.8 carb intake manifold to eliminate the need to redo fuel system and add for EFI? I realize it wont have the same power output but it would greatly simplify the swap in this case. Thanks!

no. but i have seen 4.0's converted to carb before, so it is possible. there might be aftermarket intakes designed for this swap (its been a while since i read up on it). im sure someone here has further info on it.

You would have to do something for ignition because the 4.0's dont have a distributor. I am interested tho because I would love to have a 4.0 in my 83 and just run it on propane. Would a Msd be able to run the ignition?

Carbs suck. Take the extra few hours to wire it up right.

But it may be easier and cheaper if its just a off road rig.

The time spent fawking around with figuring out how to even make it have spark could be spent wiring the original EFI up correctly. Off-road is the last place I want a carb.

I would like to put a 4.0 in my 83 ranger and I want to make it run on propane. Propane doesnt have all the disadvantages of a carb engine. I just want the extra torque from a 4.0 but don't know how to get ignition.

ive been searching for that carbed 4.0 that i know i saw a while ago...i have a feeling it may have been lost in the server switch.

but i did find that tom morana offers conversion manifolds for carbs for the 4.0. CLICKY its towards the bottom. looks ugly as sin (especially with that price tag!).

all 4.0 blocks are already machined for a distributor. older blocks have a plug in the hole, newer ones have a CMP in it. a 2.9 dizzy could probably be made to work (might even drop in), but intake manifold clearence could be an issue. if anyone has a 4.0 cam syncro shaft and a 2.9 dizzy, itd be easy enough to hold them side by side and see if itd work.

The intake ports on the 2.8 aren't evenly spaced. That's why you can't use an intake manifold from one, period.

I would like to see a carbed 4.0 though. I want to see it when done!

I just read that the oil pump rotates in the opposite direction as a 2.9 dizzy:icon_confused:

What would the 4.0 computer do if there was not any fuel injectors? Would the ignition part of the ecu still work?

It would probably be be like OMG! NO INJECTORS! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! WTF! *self implodes*.

You could possibly do a duraspark with it? cause don't the 2.8 and 2.9 use the same dizzy? or are they different gears.

being that the 2.8's cam is gear driven and the 2.9's is chain driven, i would imagine the dizzys would be different....

The 2.8 distributor rotation is different of that in a 2.9. The 2.9 and 4,0 camshaft both rotate in the same direction... making one think it should work. The 4.0 also has a cam position sensor located where the distributor would be .... IF it ran a distributor. Kinda makes one wonder if the distributor from a 2.9 would fit in a 4.0.

Sven Pruett said it could be done with the approperiate cam gear from the dealership, but offered no part numbers. Another guy on this forum also stated he used a 2.8L dizzy in a 2.9L. I have to look it up later if I remember to. I'd try it in my 2.9L if I didn't have to use my money on my V8 swap.

2.9L dizzy would have interference with the 4.0L EFI intake manifold.
