What is this sending device?

1989 4x4 xlt 2.9 auto. On the drivers side of the oil pan there is a sending unit. what is it. mine is leaking and the wires look bad. Is it a concern? Thanks
 
oil level sending unit. causes the oil light on the dash to illuminate if your over a quart or so low. its not needed, but handy to have. its a common place for oil to leak. i lebeieve there is an o-ring or gasket under it that needs replacing.
