I'm going to dig into the water pump tomorrow on my 98 ranger 3.0 with 150k.

Parts are generally cheap so when I'm in there is there anything else I should look at changing out, maintaining, or inspecting. Do these trucks have any problem with timing chains? Should I be worried about it or will that add too much more to the work.

Thanks all in advance!
Wish me luck!

Vince

timing chains usually outlast the engine...id leave it be.

theres nothing much else to do on the front of the engine while servicing the water pump. i would give the cooling system a good flush once you get it back together if it hasnt been done recently.

change the fan belt because you will already have it off, and thermostat if you feel like it

Is the water pump 100% dead or just on it's way out? If it's on the way out, I'd flush the system before you replace it. That way, you don't risk damaging a brand new pump with the loose crud.

Change out the four way plastic heater control valve. You will be pulling around on the hoses and at ten years old the darn thing is probably rotten.
