I know ford sells a tool for this but is there a way to align it without the tool? swapping a 92 4.0 into a 96 truck and need to know where its supposed to be lined up, thanks.

ebay has the tools as well. if the old one is still in the block just put them both on TDC and reinstall like a distributor.

the 92 block that were using had a block off plate an the 96 requires a cam sensor so we need to find a good way to install this.

put both engines at top dead center on compression stroke. remove the cam position sensor from the cam syncro shaft. mark the orientation of the metal flag to the syncro body, and the syncro body to a reference point on the head or block. remove the syncro and drop into the '92 block with all your marks lined up. install the CMP.
