I'm guessing the heat and photons from the headlights greatly accelerates whatever chemical reaction causes the yellowing...?
In any event, I'm about to get after my headlights with whatever polishing compounds, toothpaste, and buffer wheels I can dig up in my utility room... not sure what I'll use for clearcoat...?

Sorry man - I had too 
Don't forget they can be sanded with very fine sand paper and work towards 1000 to 1200 grit and THEN polish. Good Luck
