Do we have any type of article on replacing shifter bushings on a manual transmission? If not I can supply a write up.

I noticed it was time to replece my shifter bushing when i could move my shifter side to side almost 3 inches in gear!! Thats alot of slop. I went down to my local ford dealership and bought the following part numbers: 1L2Z-7Z120-AA( 2 needed), 1L2Z-7228-AA(2 needed), and E8TZ-7E018-A(2 needed). The parts cost about $36.00 w/ tax. You may want to go ahead and replace the inner shift boot (which is another $30 dollars) for it may be worn or torn. This is part # 1L2Z-7277-AA. MAKE SURE TRANNY IS IN NUETRAL BEFORE REMOVING INNER SHIFTER....IT WILL SAVE YOU ALOT OF HEADACHE.

Shifter Bushings, Washers, Inner Shift Boot, and Pins
1). Remove the 4 screws that hold the the shift boot to the floor. Pull boot up out of the way.
2). Use a 19mm or 11/16 wrench to remove the nut from the slip bolt. Place the nut on the oposite side of the bolt and tighten it to slip the bolt out of the shifter. Now the shifter should be free.

3). Remove inner shift boot. There should be three star bits holding it in place.

4). Gently pry out the top shifter bushing and remove inner shifter.

5). Knock the two pins back and pry the remaining lower bushing out.
6). There should be a plastic bushing, a wavy washer and a flat washer. The wavy washer should have little clips that will clip onto the plastic peice. The flat washer will go in between the wavy washer and bushing.
7). Install the lower bushing, with the wavy washer down.

8). Knock pins back into place, make sure heads are flush.
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff85/Ranger8844/Amanda029.jpg
9). Reinstall the inner shifter.
10). Install upper bushing with the wavy washer up.
11). Reinstall the inner shift boot.
12). Reinstall the shifter and push the slip bolt back through the hole and tighten the nut.
13). Pull the shifter boot back down and tighten the 4 screws.
ALL DONE!!!
I noticed that it was much easier to and a much more positive feel to each shift.

The order of parts are from top to bottom wavy washer, flat washer, bushing, bushing, flat washer, then wavy washer.

How much play is there in the shifter now?

Very little(maybe 1/8 of an inch). I actually found that there were no shifter bushings in there, just the washers. So worn shifter bushings will have a little less play than the 3 to 3.5 inches I experienced.

OK great - Ive actually got about 3-4 inches of play while in gear too, so maybe my '94 has the same problem as yours.
Thanks again.

If you got that much play in your gears then you need new bushings. I had that much play also untill I got a hurst shifter. Now I got little to none.

i only had the steel wave washers in mine when i took mine apart, ford dealer was trying to sell me the whole top-cover assy to the trans, i just ordered a hurst instead, now im thinking of going back now that i have some part #s and putting the shifter back to stock. the hurst is great but im in a bit of a money crunch latly and could sell the hurst and my factory alloys to a neighbor for some much needed cash. i wish they would offer the parts in a kit, they all go bad somewhere down the line, being nylon there almost designed to fail.

ya know, i was thinking the exact same thing. I am not able to make it to my local parts department due to the hours theyre open, and thought someone should put the parts together and sell them as packets here on TRS.
May be a small business idea for ya.

Yes. Thank you.
What years/applications does this work on...or do those part numbers work on I guess....

I did it on a 93', I can check at the dealership and ask them what years the part numbers fit. I'm guessing any mazda RBV 5spd. At least 89' or 90' to 97' if not newer.

this procedure also works on the M5OD-R2 transmission found in the full size ford trucks. the part numbers match as well.

Is there a similar fix for my 84? It is so sloppy that it actually gets lost in 5th....if you don't pull the shifter towards the driver as you shift up out of 5th it just floats around all over the place.
HELP!!!

Hmmm, you probably have one of the older Toyo Koygo's. I'm not real sure on this. I'd say go and post a question in the tranny section of the forums. That way more people who know about the older tranny's will buzz in.
