I have a 86 ranger 4x4 2.9 with the tk5 that's going out and looking for a better trans. I would like to find a m5od but it looks like there's a lot of parts involved (drive shafts, clutch hydraulic line and slave) I am just trying to find the best route to go. I dont want to spend alot of money doing this as the truck isnt worth much.

How much of a strength difference is there between the toyo and a fm146? would there be drive shaft mods to make it work with either the mazda or mits trans?

There is no strength difference between the fm146 and the tk5. The fm 145 is the ONLY other tranny that will bolt in without modifications....but....it too is not any stronger.

FWIW, to use an fm146, you would have to do the same modifications as swapping in an m5od, which is by far a better manual than any other offered in an RBV........
