EGR Help

So i ran the codes and got back 31 (EVP voltage below minimum) and 84 (EGR vaccum regulator circuit failure) well when i went to find the EGR this is what i found:

its capped off? or what? im confused as to whether i have a EGR or EVP or whats goin on here. :no2:

I have the thing circled but the tube i marked with the "X" is plugged with a screw. thanks for any help

looks like someone deleted the EGR. i believe only later (89-90?) year 2.9's came from the factory sans-EGR.

look around the area of the block off...are there any electrical connectors that arent plugged into anything?

The valve cover shown in that picture is from an '88+ (the lip around the edge faces up, 86-87 faces down) Possible engine swap at some time? Egr's were only on the 86-87 model years to my knowledge. My 87's both have egr, but my 88 does not.

And what's with the shiny thing to the right of the thermostat hsg in picture 1? There should be a temp sender (for the gauge) there.
In picture 2 you can see the orange wire with the 90 degree connector sitting just next to the valve cover bolt......

i think i know what that is. it appears to be a socket from a gear ratchet:

we sold them at the napa i worked at.

A socket???? That's hilarious! I wonder how well it measures engine temps....

As far as details go, I somewhat live/breathe 2.9/4.0 engines. I have several trucks with them (quite literally a dozen or so....) Someday i'll post pictures.

thats awesome! ya thats one of those Kobalt sockets over the temp switch! I love those pass-through sockets that will fit over long bolts. But thats a story for another thread lol.

They guy that had it before me said he DID swap in another 2.9 but didnt remember what year. I found another ECU under the seat when i was taking out the seats but havent plugged it in to try it out yet. If that doesnt work should i go to the boneyard and find one for an 88+? im assuming the ECU from a bronco or ranger are interchangeable for the 2.9?

so i put in the other computer and got this for codes:
86 2.3L or 2.9L Truck - A4LD 3/4 shift solenoid - Transmissions
95 (O) Fuel pump: open, bad ground or always on - Power / Fuel Pump Circuits

i drove it around with this computer in it and it seemed to drive ok. engine still noisy as hell but ok.

like I said above the one thats looks like its been reprogramed shows codes:
84 EGR Vacuum Regulator - Solenoids
31 EVP - (O, R, M) EVP signal is/was out of range - EVP
21 Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor out of range - ECT

which one should i use? :icon_confused:

also if I pull the O2 sensor and nothing changes and i dont get a code is the sensor bad?

if the truck is a 5 speed i would run the top computer (the one that gives you shift solenoid codes). those two codes are a lot less likely to cause engine damage or lower your power/fuel economy than EGR and ECT codes.

if you unplug the O2 and dont get codes something is seriously wrong (bad computer?). the PCM will usually finger a bad O2 pretty quickly...and unplugging the O2 should trip a code almost immediatly.

thanks wicked you've helped alot.

i do have the a4ld, so ill put the other comptuer in tomorrow and see if how she runs. if it doesnt run well again im going to assume its the coolant temp sensor (stays in cold cycle even once warm?). i just replaced this after getting the code. so i cleared the codes and it came up again. maybe its a ground issue that i need to track down.

well if your truck is an auto i would look into fixing whatever is wrong with the shift solenoid circuit...you kinda need that for proper trans. operation.

its odd that you get an ECT code with one computer and not the other.... :dunno:
