Intrument Cluster

I'm trying to remove the instrument cluster on my 1986 ford ranger 4wd 2.9 v6. Anyone know how to. I removed all the bolts and replaced one but i cant get to the speedometer light since there is a cable holding it. HELP!

You need to be able to reach the speedometer cable. I read somewhere you can get more slack from unhooking the cable from the transmission, but I opted to remove the dash pad since I am working on a sheet metal dash with new gauges. So I have no clue if that would work for you. It's kind of a PITA, but you have to press down on the flat spot and the cable pulls (lightly) off. Be careful on pulling the 2 harnesses from the panel if you do so.

yep pete's right. if you have a buddy that can help you it works better. you just gotta trace the cable back down and have one person put some slack in the cable while you disconnect it from the top

ive takein the dash out plenty of times without making anyslack or anything just lay on the floor board on ur back reach up and find the spedo cable were it connects to the dash push the tab while pulling down on the cable and it will pull out then u can pull it back out far enough to dissconnect the wire plugins in the back hope that helps

Dittos. I've done the same thing when I used to work on cab's where I used to live. (nothing beats working on 15 year old cars trying to keep piles of crap running LOL) However the best bet is to work yourself under the dash on your back. This is also where having a small body helper comes in handy. I'm 6' tall @ about 295. Picture someone my size with their legs and feet over the top of the seat back, and head/neck under the dash using the brake pedal as a pillow.
