i have been thinking for months about how to make my 94 ranger AWD not 4wd . AWD! i know were awd transfer cases are but is it possible to make a lowered ranger awd without killing the truck or myself. i was thinking this because my brothers Syclone keeps kicking my ass off the line and i wanna take it to the next level.

installing a 4x4 front axle into that generation of truck is a rather large chore. the engine/front suspension crossmember is different between 2wd and 4wd, which means grinding all the rivets out of yours and a 4wd truck and bolting the 4wd crossmember, then axle, into yours....not very fun.

after you have the 4wd front axle, its just a matter of bolting on an explorer 4404 and possibly having drivelines made.

EDIT: lowering the 4x4 front axle is a whole other ball game. a 2" drop should be easy enough with just springs, but anything past that and you'll probably be looking at a cut and turn job to get your camber into spec.

96 exploder 2dr has an auto 4wd option I believe. I got one for sale right here near me. its lookin like my next vehicle. This is full time 4x4 that only disengages at the transfer case. Kinda like the humvee's. The expedition I have uses the same setup. It engages when traction loss is recognized by the TCS. Least this is the way I have seen the expe work. When I looked at the sploder it all looked the same. Not quite AWD but similar. more crude.

the 4404 is a true AWD t-case using a viscous coupling on the front driveline. it cannot be shifted to 2wd any way.

the 4405 is an automatic 4wd transfer case that is shifted between 2wd and 4wd by an on-board computer. it cannot be driven on high traction surfaces in 4wd because it is a true 4wd transfer case that does not allow for slippage between the front and rear drivelines like the 4404 does.

i would not try to run the 4405 and its automatic 4wd system in a ranger. this would require extensive wiring, as well as the computer and sensors that control the t-case. the 4404 is a bolt-in and forget it case.

not rally. more of just traction and street racing. street or track. i have though much about the 4x4 ranger front axle but i have bel-tech dream beam front suspension and that lowers 3". there no possible way to make beltechs hold a differential.
And chevy vans came with AWD differentials. i dont want all time 4x4. and wheel slip and shit is controled by computer so would i have to swap computers or make everything mechanical.

in order to drop the 4x4 axle 3" from stock 2wd height, i would spend some time checking for axle clearence, particularly between the pig and crossmember. if everything clears, and if your really lucky, you could still get the alignment back into spec without changing anything but the accentric bushings. but more likely youll have to cut and turn the ball joint holes....not a HUGE deal...but you gotta know what your doing.

FYI, differentials arent "AWD", the transfer case is what determins if a vehicle is "AWD" or "4WD".

if you run into clearence issues with dropping the TTB that far, you should look into swapping in an IFS front end from a 98+ 4wd. you could easily achieve your drop with that setup...plus it has the added advantage of being a little better suited for on-road use than the old-fashioned TTB.

is it really worth all the troubel to change the entire front end set-up? if you're dead set on doing this, i'd suggest just selling your truck and buying a 98+ ranger.... make your project a whole lot easier....
