I finally found a remanufactured limited slip for my 89 Ranger 5 speed. It will be here in a day or two. What oiul is best to use in this units. I'm assuming it would need some sort of friction modifier ?

BTW, if anyone needs a L/S, price is hard to beat. No, I have no interest in this at all, just want to share the info especially since the friendly Ford dealer wanted over $ 900 for the carrier. Installation was not included.. Send me a PM since I'm not sure what the rules are.

The folks that are installing my 4.10 FX4 front differential and upgrading my rear to 4.10 and Limited Slip swear by this stuff.

WC Motorsport & Offroad (wcmotorsport.com) is the shop I'm dealing with...

I had the shop put Royal Purple in my differential with my recent gear swap. Look for local transmission shops, they usually do gear swaps also.

I also run royal purple. Drive train felt smoother after a few miles and it feels great.

Hopefully you paid less than $150 for it. Any more than that and I would have bought a superior aftermarket LSD (or locker for that matter) for only a little more.

fancy gear oils? whatever floats your boat

Limited slip axles grab best WITHOUT friction modifier. Friction modifier
is used to make them slip "smoothly" if you want more grip don't use it.

And thinner oil also helps generate more grip...

Well, no I didn't, paid a few bucks more. The used units on ebay w/ shipping were going for almost the same as this new unit. Local yards had nada.. Plus, I had no way of knowing what I was getting with a used unit, perhaps a whiner, perhaps not.
Eaton and the like were well over $ 300 and up, mostly up. Actually, I want a unit that will not chatter around corners but provide a little more in the way of traction if I get caught in the snow. I'm assuming the stock factory unit will provide that bit extra.
BTW, thanks to those who provided the info on the oil, wasnt aware that friction modifiers would provide less traction although since they are clutches of a sort, it makes sense.

Yeah, the purpose of the modifier is to ALLOW the clutches to slip instead of grab.

We can't have soccer Moms complaining about the funny noise
their explorer makes when parking at the mall can we?

My thought is if my rear axle "chatters" I'm simply not going fast
enough to keep the TIRES slipping smoothly:)

BTW, for the record I do run synthetic oil
In my Rear axle I run the Motorcraft 80W-140 synthetic oil
And in the front 70w90 Mobil1 synthetic

I run the Motorcraft oil in the back because I have six or seven
cases of the stuff. I'm running the Mobil1 in the front because
I prefer thinner oil in the front diff, I have two cases of it and
I couldn't find the special ford front axle oil when I needed to
fill the front diff:)

I didn't go out and buy the oil, it was stuff I literally had laying around.

Thank GOD I didn't need to buy it, that valvoline stuff is $30 a quart and the 85W140 not much cheaper.
