Shocks at U-Pull It


In my defense so I don't sound like a complete idiot. I was talking to my dad about it and he told me to get some shocks from a junkyard that look good. I didn't want to so decided to get a second opinion.
 
I dunno, I definitely wouldn't. I would just spend the money and get some cheaper replacements because they would be better than any half worn ones you find in the junk yard unless you get lucky and find some bilstein's or rancho's that are still good.
 
Generally, shocks don't last long at all, esp. if used offroad. I have never had a pair last more than two years. They can look perfect too but be totally shot. The only way to test them is to actually remove them and work the piston.

I would never get shocks at a yard. They are a rapid-wear item.
 
My point exactly, my dad is 72 and a get by on what you can type of guy. So he would be just fine getting some worn shocks that have more rebound that what he currently has.
 
here's another way of looking at it. If you're as broke as I am then any shocks that work are better than no shocks.
 
I've found some newly installed parts on some vehicles that were like new...you never know...like my Motorcraft 5200 carb...it was almost new...I guess the guy trashed the car just after installing it due to rust...and didn't bother taking it off...

But wear items can be deceptive...if you see obviousl body damage from an accident and parts that look new I'd take them...probably scraped the vehicle instead of trying to finish it and got the insurance money so they didn't care...you never know...
 
I wouldn't expect shock absorbers to handle collision forces well at all.

If you absolutely have to get shocks from the yard, look for a vehicle that has a blown major drivetrain part. Or for rear shocks, an engine fire.

But IMO this isn't anywhere near worth it.
 
considering you can get decent new ones for under 25 bucks apiece I wouldn't do it.
 
used shocks are like used toilet paper. not cool! if i was broke as hell, and one got bent, or seized, i would consider a used one, but thats about it.
 
maybe i would put some junkyard shocks on so I could get to the parts store to get some cheapos if I was broke
 
If they're decent gas shocks and look in good shape, I'd consider nabbing them (especially Bilsteins or KYBs). You should be able to get some general idea of their age/mileage by how dirty/rusty they are, and the condition of their bushings. Gas-charged shocks should self-extend as well, if they don't you'll know the seals have gone bad on it.
 
I keep a set of trail spairs of everything I can fawk up. I'm runnin the same shock all the way around so I have one in the tool box along with some extra TREs and U joints and shit.

I ran 80 miles down I70 at 65 miles an hour with out rear shocks and that was a hell of a time. I'd much rather have had some shitty kerfuckulated shock then none at all.
 
I have pulled alot of struts from the junkyard. That's a different story though because struts usually cost alot more new. Shocks at a junkyard around here are like $5 a piece though so i see no shame in pulling some if I needed them.
