I'm experiencing the same problem as discussed in the thread:

http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33942

A nasty, random thud when in 4x4. HOWEVER, I don't use 4x4 in dry conditions-- I live in NH and only activate it in extremely snowy weather, when I'd slide off of the road otherwise.

My mechanic suggested that this could be due to uneven tire wear? It seems more severe than that to me?????

Chris

Oh yeah, it's a 2005 4.0 auto with 65K

Sounds like your mechanic is on the ball. Tire circumference MUST be within 1/4" of each other when the tire pressures are set to spec. Thats the good news. If you find the tires are within spec, chances are the problem may be in the transfer case as a stretched chain.

I have the same problem. I had my transfercase repaired twice already, and it still does it. I saw one thread where someone was having the driveline clunk and slip, I don't know if anyone else can comment on this? Mine only does it in four low however. The chain was stretched when it was rebuilt, but I think something else is causing it. I have started several threads on this problem and no one seems to have any idea what causes it. My next step is to buy a junkyard transfercase and driveline and see if that fixes it.

hmmm

Well, I guess I'll start with new tires and keep my fingers crossed. Thanks guys.

No, measure your old ones first. Then make the decision .
