is there any chance I'd be able to swap out my 1997 2.3l sidestep rear axel possibaly leaf springs for one from a 2004 v6 reg cab? Sorry if its a dumb question.

assuming both trucks are 2wd the ford 8.8 is a bolt in swap. somebody else chim in if the leaf springs are mounted to the same measurements on a 4x4

All Ranger rear axle spring perches are the same position from 1983 to 2009. There may be drive flange , park brake cable and /or service brake line differances but they are easy to over come if needed.
