I got a 93 4x4 with a 3.0 5 speed. i've been having a synchro problem. It grinds a little going into 3rd and 4th. Anyway i down shifted into 3rd, and now it won't come out. Any trick to getting it out? And has anyone rebuilt a r-1 trans. Any special tools needed? Or is it worth rebuilding? I'm almost leaning towards a reman. So i can take it out and put another right in.

You could have bent a shift fork downshifting and now it won't come out. I bent one once when I blew up an input bearing and it kicked against the shift fork...wouldn't come out no matter how hard I pulled and pushed.

if anyone can confirm this. By what i understand all 3.0 rangers from 91 up have an r-1 trans. So would that make them all interchangable? As well as interchangable with the 4.0 with this trans?

It is an r1 and the 4.0 is different from the 3.0 as in the bell housing. They are not a difficult transmission to rebuild as long as you didn't cook every single bearing in the transmission. The guts might be interchangeable between the 2 engines though.

a bent shift fork is about as likely as finding King Arthur's sword Excaliber
saber inside the trans and blocking the shift fork from moving.
They are MASSIVE hunks of aluminum, break? mabey.
Bend? No way, no how.
Other than that I don't want to speculate.

so i had a friend pull my truck with him backwards whike i was letting the clutch out slowly. it must have loosened up something because it came out of 3rd but i think i'm still going to get another trans, because it's a seems little noisy now, and it don't want to go into 3rd now. But at least i can get back and forth to work for the mean time.

I would be leary of driving it until you figure out the problem, or find someone who can come get you on a moments notice when the other gears start acting up.
