Found one w/ LS but i have been told they are 31 splines and was also told that my ranger w/ 4.0 auto has 28 splines. can someone clear the air for me

Yep, that's correct. The shafts are also bigger on the Explorer axle. You can swap the Ex axle into your truck but that takes flipping the spring perches and welding on shock mounts.

All explorer/f150/bronco rear ends have 31 spline
All rangers expect the fx4 level 2(or somethig like that) have 28 spline.The fx4 level 2 had 31 spline.
Your 97 ranger will have 28 spline.
if your just after the posi unit,and won't be doing the install yourself, you may want to look in to a lockrite or aussie.
