What size exhaust would sound the best form cat back on a 1993 ford ranger 4.0? 3? 2.5?, nice deep throaty sound but don't make it sound like ass, and of course duals
 
Don't go any bigger than 2.5. I would go 2.5 into the muffler and dual 2.25 out with like 3.5" tips. Thats just me though. But def. don't go bigger than 2.5
 
i wouldnt waste my money on split duals. they add the weight, cost, and complexity of duals, but still sound the same as single.

id go with a good 2.5" mendral bent single system.
 
Sounds pretty good but still has a v-6 twang to it--try NO muffler with drilled out Harley mufflers at the end of the exhaust pipe for a 289cu.in. v-8 sound(or just follow Wicked's advice & save urself a lot of work)....:icon_hornsup:
 
Single in single out 2.5 inch setup running through the stock exhaust location with a good muffler works out just fine.
 
I really like the idea of a single 2.5" routed where the factory exhaust is now. A nice subtle chrome tip 3" or so tucked neatly so it doesn't hang down far...

But you want duals, so a 2.5" inlet/2.25" dual outlet would sound nice. Run it straight back and tuck it up neatly. A lot of people run flowmaster, but it won't give you the V8 sound like most people hope for. I have heard the borla mufflers, and I really like the exhaust note they emit. I use a flopro muffler and love it. Its a deep powerful sound and I get a lot of compliments on it. check out www.flopro.com
 
I'm running 3 inch custom mandrel bent single through a flowmaster exiting out behind the pass. tire (factory location). With the 3 liter V6 it has a nice rumble at idle and is pretty throaty throughout the rpm range. Alot of people ask if I'm running a 5.0 but I guess it sounds pretty good. The only problem I found with this setup is it throws a code (insufficient exaust back pressure) and sets off the check engine light.
 
your running too large of a pipe for your displacement and RPM. your loosing bottom end performance with that setup (as well as confusing your EGR system).
 
Whats strange is I have a very good launch and low end power, way better than that 1.75 stock exaust. I was thinking of dropping it down to 2.5 inch though mainly to keep the Hondaricers from wanting to race all the time and getting pissed when they can't keep up.
 
stock is 2".

i guaranty your loosing torque with that large of a pipe. hit the dyno, you'll see :icon_thumby:
 
3 inch is definitely WAY TOO BIG.. 2.25 or 2.5 should be fine. I have 3 inch on a worked 350 and if I didn't go with cats it would have been 2.5.
 
I have 2-1/2 inch pipe with a 2-1/2 in/out cherry bomb glasspack on mine, it needs a flowmaster
