It's an 8.8 with a heavy duty MAC diff cover, 4.56 gears, and a posi. It's ready to be bolted into the Ranger!

Thanks, yeah it needs to be cleaned up a bit though. I'm going to hit it with my pressure washer before I put it in. I paid $300 for it. I figured it was cheaper then paying someone to install the 4.56 gearset I have into my 7.5 axle plus it already has the ratio I want and it's beefier.

I can't wait to put it in because driving around with these 3.73's is pure torture man! Especially with this 4-banger!

Yeah, after I pressure wash it I'll probably do some high temp rattle can job...........hahaha.

does it have 3 punch marks by the filler plug?
 
How did you find one with a good diff cover?

Every junkyard I've been in drains the lubricant by punching holes in the cover.

I'd remove that cover and take a good look at the gear surfaces before installing, just to be safe. They should be brightly polished and very smooth, under the contact pattern. No pitting or chips at all.

Looks real nice. Gloss black engine enamel works nicely, but doesn't last too well. An alternative is POR-15, though it's kinda expensive. On the brake drums, use exhaust manifold paint (or "high heat" engine enamel, which is largely the same thing).
 
Best paint I've found is implement paint, meant for tractors etc. It's a single part paint, but you can get a hardener for it that speeds up dry time and does harden the paint.
Paint is around $25 a gallon, and the hardener is about $8.

Never found anything that could beat the price and durability of it.
Get it up here at tractor supply company (TSC), but have picked it up at other farm and fleet stores.

I actually bought it from a private party on "Craigslist". That's why the diff cover is intact. I've seen what you're talking about though.

I think I'm just going to use an el' cheapo spray paint can. Flat black. I'll probably pressure wash it and do it tomorrow.

FWIW, engine enamel (both standard and "high heat") qualifies as "el cheapo."

It looks real nice as long as you follow the directions (all coats within two minutes or wait a week -- they mean it!).

you have to have a gun and compresser thou.
