The book that came with the truck says, Mercon ATF. It was recomended in another thread, not to use the "V" suffex because ti is too slippery, and will cause problems.
My question, is it OK to use synthetic ATF? (1996 5 SPEED.) Shifting into 1st is stiff at times, all other gears shift OK (sitting still or moving).

Yes you can use synthetic atf, just make sure you use Mercon atf. I previously owned a 1995 Ranger that had a 5 speed and when I changed the transmission fluid in it, I used synthetic atf and did not have any problems at all.

i personally run pennzoil syncromesh fluid. but i have tried all different types of a.t.f. and it makes little diference if any if you use synthetic or conventional oil. mercon "V" replaces the old regular mercon anyhow. just dont use gear oil, i once put 80w 90 in a jeep CJ-7 trans that was supposed to have atf in it. was impossible to shift in the winter and come spring it was one noisy gearbox. put up for sale shortly therafter.
