Hi.... I'm new to this site.. and new to driving 4X4
I just bought an 03 FX4 4x4.... My problem is when I put it in 4 high, it seems to go in ok... but when I take off it feels like it has to much pull down load on it.... I can go like a half block or so and there will be a big thud ( feels like dropping into a big pothole or something )... I always just stop and put it out of 4 wheel drive.....I've only tried it about three times, and it did it every time ( so before I break something I wanted to try and fix it ) I didn't notice any odd noises or anything ..... Also while making a turn the front wheels will sort of grab and squeal on the blacktop.......Hope I don't sound like to much of a dummy, but I really need help because I just don't have a clue.......:bawling:

DONT USE 4X4 ON PAVEMENT! You're binding up everything in the drivetrain because the tires can't slip. It's a good way to break something.

+1

this isnt an AWD, its a 4WD. it should only be used in real off-road situations (wet pavement and gravel roads dont count as off-road). the only time it should be used on-road is if its icy or snowy and even then, you should switch it off as soon as the road conditions permit.

+1. The Ranger was not meant to be a fulltime 4x4. There has to be a little slip in the system. Gravel, snow, ice, dirt, mud... All OK. Dry pavement is a no no!!

Thanks guys for the replies........this is my first 4x4 and I don't know dip about them.....what you guys said all makes since..... I was thinking the Thud mite be it trying to jump out of 4x4.......or maybe a rough shift.. (auto trans) .........
Thanks again.....
