Shifter lever question

Is there supposed to be oil in the shifter lever? I removed it and has no oil in the transmission were the shifter lever goes. It's an 86 ford ranger 4wd, 2.9 manual trans.
 
its oiled internally by the transmissions oiling system.

make sure your transmission is full to the fill plug and thats it.
