View Full Version : When did the 2.3L cut-in? 2001's with 2.5L...
:icon_confused:
I've been reading reviews [owner] out in webland and see a number of them who have 2001 model rangers but with the older 2.5L 4-cylinder.
Was there some clean cutoff date as to when the 2.5L was dropped and the rest of the Rangers came with 2.3L or was it different at different assembly points, or what?

the duratec 2.3 started on '02.
then these forums are setup incorrectly. this one should read "(2002 & newer)"

huh, never noticed that. '01 is kind of a weird place to split them.
maybe you should post a thread in the report site problems forum :icon_thumby:

the tech library and everywhere else ive seen online says the duratec started in '02.
except autozone says both were available in '01...which would make sense (you gotta keep selling the old engines until you run out).
ive never actually seen a 2.3 in an '01 before...
Edmunds only shows the older 2.5L for that year [along with the 2 sixes]. Cars.com in the 'research' section has it the other way around, as does KBB.com which only lists a 2.3L as the sole 4cyl.
Wikipedia has it both ways:
"That engine was replaced by a new DOHC 2.3 L Duratec I4 in mid-2001"
I have yet to see it, but the owner of the 2001 I am pursuing assures me its a 2.3L duratec....
more chum in the murky water:

The Duratec was introduced in mid-2001. The Rangers made in the first half of 2001 got the 2.5 Lima and the ones made in the second half got the 2.3 Duratec.
Well, if all goes well I'll pickup my new pickup tomorrow at noon :yahoo:
This is a beige/tan/gold/champagne [dunno the proper term] 2001 XLT stretch cab, no frills, with a Duratec 2.3, 5-speed, 115K miles. The label on the door frame says it was built 4/01. The way models go, this is then a 'midyear' date.
I must say I was quite impressed. I ride three motorcycles and the motor reminds me of my Vstrom 650 motor in that it is very smooth, very free-revving. I was a bit stunned by how much smoother and responsive it is than the two 3.0L V6's I drove [and I owned one, but way back... 1990]. The little guy is unhappy anywhere below about 2300rpm, but you get it there and above and it is very very sweet. Plenty of power for what its intended for, IMHO and there's lotsa aftermarket goods to trick it.
Got a good deal on it: 3450.

At Wal Mart the spark plug and filters books show both 2.3 and 2.5. When I was searching for my current 2004 I saw some ads for 2.3 2001s and others for 2.5 2001s.
