I am going to buy some new gears and I have decided on 4.56 gears. I have a 93 etxtended cab, 4.0l 5 speed. I just recently put some 33X12.5 tires on it and with the stock 3.27 gears, I am less than satified.

Anyway, with installing these gears, is there anything I should know? Any special items I will need to get for these gears? I have heard mixed answers on this, some like I will need a new carrier, or cross pin, ect. I have a trac loc in the rear (8.8), and a stock d35 open front end. Will this be a straight forward install?

Thanks

You should grind of the back edge of one tooth on the ring gear instead of getting a notched crosspin. The pinion gear does not contact this area so it won't weaken it, and the notched crosspins are much weaker.

I wouldn't have to grind much?

I have a couple cross pins around I could clear myself also. $40 sounds a little pricey for a new one.

No you just grind the very corner off one tooth. It's much work than it would be too grind the entire length of a crosspin, and like I said, much stronger.

Alright, sounds good, thanks

What brand gears should I go with, Yukon?

33's with 3.27 gears
4.56 gear install

yeah, it a dog right now....Glad I have 4 low for the trails

I felt that same pain last spring. I put 31's on mine with a 2.3, 5spd, and 2.45 gearing. It wasnt any good at all lol. It looked sick though, but thats useless for what I wanted.

also be sure to measure the rotational torque with an inch pound torque wrench. this is very crutial to set the pinion bearing preload.

stay with ford gears or atleast that what they say for mustangs

Alright, getting ready to order my gears, I am going with 4.56 gears Yukon brand.... CAN'T WAIT!!! Gonna rebuild my trac lock in the rear and I have been thinking about locking the front diff while I'm in there.....we will see on that. 300 for a locker might blow the budget.

I have another question...I was looking on other threads and I saw people using a case spreader on the front d35 while installing the gears...do i need this or does it just make it easier? I can make one if I need one, so it isn't a big deal, I just want to know before hand.

Thanks

You realize that Ford gear sets are made by other manufacturers right? Motive Gear makes them I beleive.
