do you hear any clicking when you try to switch modes for the wipers? do you have power to the wiper motor?

I had the same problem with my 84. I started by cleaning the ground on the wiper motor on the firewall real good and made sure it was grounded properly. this fixed it 100%. it's in a pretty vulnerable spot and rusts pretty easy, so just take a wire brush to the surfaces and use a battery terminal brush to clean the ground wire connector and this should fix your problem. I found they would always stop when i needed them the most or if there was some sort of load on it. i ended up replacing the ground wire too.
